MAEE author visits district

AUTHOR Robin Bird, a retired local newspaper editor who is currently writing his second book about the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment at Helensburgh, Rhu and Glen Fruin, visited the area for three days last week.

New focus on Deborah Kerr

HELENSBURGH’S iconic film star Deborah Kerr, who died in 2007, is once again the focus of media attention this month.

She is the subject of a retrospective at the British Film Institute on London‘s Southbank in partnership with the Independent newspaper from September 1 to October 13, and a new biography will be published on September 15.

Trust website research led to visit

THIS Helensburgh Heritage Trust website attracts many inquiries from abroad — usually about family history.

One email inquiry early in 2010 came from Karen Ondrasek, a financial controller in Dayton, Ohio, and in early August she took it a step further by coming to stay for two nights at Rhu’s Rosslea Hall Hotel as she researched her roots.

Morven read story on radio

HELENSBURGH-born actress Morven Christie was the reader for episode 3 of the BBC Radio 4 programme Opening Lines on Thursday August 19 2010.

Opening Lines gives emerging short-story writers their radio debut, and Morven read the final story in this series, 'Kiss' by Heather Reid.

Did John Logie Baird win?

HELENSBURGH TV inventor John Logie Baird could be featured on a new coin to be issued by the Royal Mint — if enough people voted for him online.

He faced stiff competition from Jane Austen, Douglas Bader, Sir Walter Raleigh, Emmeline Pankhurt and John Lennon to become the next Great Briton, which, when chosen, will feature on a coin to be struck by the Royal Mint and made available later in the year.

Blackie home in Rhu on sale

A RHU house built in 1936 by publisher Walter Blackie — who also commissioned the building of Hill House in Helensburgh by Charles Rennie MacKintosh — has been put up for sale.

Offers over £495,000 are being invited for The Moss in Pier Road by agents Rettie & Co. of 147 Bath Street, Glasgow. The publisher built it for his son.

Glasgow Girls work on show

THE Glasgow Boys exhibition on view in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Museum — which features works painted around the Helensburgh area and by local artists — has been well attended and highly acclaimed. But the gender balance was redressed! 

An exhibition of paintings, decorative and applied art by the Glasgow Girls (1890–1930) opened in Kirkcudbright Town Hall on Saturday July 3 and ran until the end of August.
